Frustrated Fotographer.

No I am not a photographer. I am a fotographer who can't even spell the damn thing right!

But I definitely am frustrated. It's been 6 long years since I took my first photo as a hobbyist - with my Nokia phone - and gave my own self a pat on the back for the seemingly great talent I possessed. I duly uploaded those first few pictures on Orkut and matched them with some deep quotations searched on Google for hours. Some friends and random strangers were also kind enough to leave long comments praising my rare perspective and eye for pictures.

To cut a long story short...the world has moved from Orkut to Facebook to slavery now. And I have moved from cellphone cameras to a prosumer to now a DSLR with two powerful lenses, but not much has changed in terms of what I know about photography.

I want to take this stuff seriously...like really...but all the jargon filled tutorials on the net have made it difficult for me to go through them without having the urge to get up and make breakfast/lunch/dinner/coffee first and then sit araam se and read/see them carefully. That ofcourse happens only once in 635 days.

And everytime I come back from a self-led photowalk, I look at my pictures and think about how I am a bad photographer, a bad student, an even worse person and a total failure in life! Aaaaah...pictures definitely are powerful.

To make matters worse, hubby couldn't take my cribbing about photography and Photoshop the other day and said..."Kya big deal hai yaar? Photoshop toh barweeh paas bache ek mahine mein seekh lete hain...can't you do it??" Now that totally did it for me. I have decided that enough is enough and that I will get my act together. I definitely do not want posterity to think of great grandma as a useless woman. And thus mission PS has begun.

I just placed an order for "Photoshop for dummies" - yes desperate times call for some desperate measures. And I have willed to teach myself this freaky techie art! Now I will go make myself a cup of coffee and sit down to see a few tutorials araam se.

I think the fault is not with you or your willingness to learn but the way most experts would fill learning with jargon.

The fastest way to learn something is to just let go and let your heart decide what's right. May be you did that in the early days, hence the compliments.

I am sure you already know this... somewhere.

Good luck!

Gunj,

After long absence I read all pending posts in two sittings. Today I read Travelogue series and this one while yesterday the rest. Thanks for virtual visit to all those places. Your writings took me back to my driving in hills in North India as well travel in Western Ghats and NE region. Lesson from River are so very motivational and true. Hope you got over that thinking of doing something but not doing it. As far as photography is concerned, please do just what your heart tells you. Click what you like and do not worry how it comes out as I am sure it will come out good. Keep your confidence intact. Best of luck.

Take care

hey, check out local university/school, they generally have continuing education programs and offer 8-10 weeks workshop in photography. In my experience I have find this method a good way of learning as you will also get to meet ppl who share your hobby. All the best.

Hey Girl,

Can't give you my 2 cents on the subject..
But I can understand the frustration part ..
Replace Photography with Baking and you have written the story of my life.. :)

But we don't back down.. we continue learning and keep getting better :)

I was in the same boat as you. First one through phones, normal camera, then Nikon DSLR. But then i wanted to this hobby seriously. I started devoting at-least half an hour daily on YouTube, looking through the videos of how to get better photographs.

And it helped a lot. Though you won't see the change in one day, but everyday you'll be learning one or two new facts about photography.

Good luck with your endeavor.
